TRANSPORT IN THE TOWN

Public transport

The regular buses and trams in Krakow run from approximately 5.00 a.m. until 11.00 p.m. From 11.00 pm to 5.00 there are night buses.
Schedules of all trams and buses may be found at each transit stop. The timing is quite reliable.

A normal one-way ticket costs 2.40 zł. No changing the bus or tram! You can buy it in a newspaper kiosk where there is written: sprzedaż biletów MPK. If you buy the ticket from the tram driver, you have to pay an additional 0.50 zł. Note that ISIC card or other foreign student cards are not valid for getting reduction tickets. You need to stamp the ticket immediately after boarding the bus or tram.

Rucksacks, boxes and bags larger than 20x40x60 cm also require a 2.40 zł ticket.

There are no one-week tickets any more. It is advisable to buy a month-ticket. It's valid from the date you are buying it up to 30 days.

one-month ticket for 1 tram / bus line (all days) 45 zł
one-month ticket for 2 tram / bus lines (all days) 65 zł

You can buy the one-month tickets in the MPK ticket shop in the ul. Podwale 3/5, near the Teatr Bagatela. For this you will need one passport photo.

Taxis

Unlike some European cities where taxis are notorious for taking advantage of tourists (eg. Prague), the taxis in Krakow are well regulated and most are honest, affordable and reliable. But beware of private taxis near the railway station and certain hotels, which are unreliable and overcharge. The private taxis are in the minority in Krakow and it is easy to distinguish between them and the reliable radio dispatched ones: Make sure that the car has sign on the roof and markings on the side with the telephone number and the name of the company.
Many of the companies have a toll free phone number. Some of the reliable companies are listed below:

Barbakan Taxi
tel. 9661, toll free tel.: 0800 4004 00
Euro Taxi tel. 9664
Express Taxi toll free tel.: 0800 111111
Mega Taxi tel. 9625
Metro Taxi tel. 9667
Radio Taxi tel. 919, toll free 0800 5009 19

IMPORTANT: How to order Taxi service in Krakow

While you may hail a taxi from the street, it is important to note that radio dispatched taxi firms offer discounts (approximately 20%) when you order by phone. The procedure of ordering a taxi in Krakow is different than in many other Polish cities and is as follows:

1. Call the taxi radio dispatch (most dispatchers speak English and if not ask for an English operator)
2. Tell the dispatch your location and name (it is important to give your name as this will be confirmed by the driver).
3. After waiting a few moments the dispatch will tell you the colour and type of vehicle and the time of arrival (eg. "there will be a blue Mercedes at your location in 4 minutes") ("niebieski mercedes za cztery minuty").
4. When you see your taxi (it will be of the colour and type described and will have the phone number of the company clearly marked) enter and give your name for confirmation)
5. Away you go! If you called the taxi by phone then, at your destination, with any fare above 10 Zlotych, the driver will consult a special chart and give you your discounted price. That is, you will pay less than is indicated on the meter. If you hail a taxi from the street, you must pay what is indicated on the meter.

IMPORTANT: Variable Taxi tariffs in Krakow

There are 4 taxi tariffs programmed into the taxi meter and you will pay a different tariff based on location and time of day. Tariff 1 is the least expensive per kilometer, and costs increase with tariff number (4 being the most expensive).
